Smart Wi-Fi + VoLTE = Quick Deployment
We have added IMS-based voice and messaging capabilities compatible with the GSMA’s VoLTE initiative to the Smart Wi-Fi smartphone client.
To make our solution quickly ready for deployment, we have developed a joint solution with Taqua® LLC., a leading supplier of convergence switching and small cell deployment solutions, that enables mobile operators to include Wi-Fi as part of their VoLTE deployment strategy.
The industry is moving towards voice over LTE solutions, and our technology can get them there more quickly.
Operators can add support for the GSMA’s IMS-based voice and messaging profile (IR.92) to Kineto's Smart Wi-Fi client and instantly provide coverage over existing Wi-Fi access points. With VoLTE support and leveraging Taqua’s IMS core network solution suite in the Smart Wi-Fi client, ordinary Wi-Fi access points become LTE small cells. This brings indoor coverage and capacity to macro LTE network deployments and adds critical network coverage and capacity in the exact locations subscribers spend most their time -- in their homes and offices.
With CTIA Wireless in New Orleans this week, there will be lots of announcements and chatter about IMS and LTE. We know the Kineto Smart Wi-Fi for VoLTE solution can assist operators in quickly becoming front-runners is providing solutions instead watching from the sidelines to see what their competitors will do.

Boosting Signal Boost
Signal Boost, as the name implies, uses Wi-Fi to boost the mobile signal of
Director of product marketing Paul Jevons said a few words about the success of the Signal Boost service. Here are some of the highlights:
- The Signal Boost customer base has grown by more than 50% in the last 6 months, carrying millions of calls every month.
- Signal Boost has “positive customer retention,” and customers say that “there is an improvement in coverage and call quality” when using the service.
- Customers appreciate Signal Boost. 50% say the Signal Boost feature influenced their handset choice, and 80% rate it as “easy to set up.”
- A “large portion” of active Signal Boost customers consider it “an essential feature.”

T-Mobile remains quiet on Android/UMA
T-Mobile's true plans for UMA remain locked in Seattle, where hopefully we'll get some clarity in the coming months.
Meanwhile, read the comments posted to Om's article by other UMA fans. There is a LOT of pent up demand for UMA on Android. Or check out the new T-Mobile/UMA Facebook fan page created by T-Mobile customers hungry for UMA on Android.
It should be noted that Kineto, purveyor of UMA/GAN technology, announced availability of its "Smart Wi-Fi Application" for Android back in March 2010. Smart Wi-Fi is their UMA/GAN-based client.

Smartphones on a tear
The Q2 2010 numbers are in, and people love smartphones! According to Strategy Analytics, and covered in a piece on RCR Wireless, smartphone shipments jumped 43% year over year. More impressive is that 60m units were shipped in Q2. That works out to nearly 20% of the total number of handset units sold worldwide. Very impressive.
As a result of a recent smartphone survey sponsored by Kineto Wireless, we know that over 80% of all smartphones have Wi-Fi. The next step must be Smart Wi-Fi.

Telefonica launches mobile VoIP
About 9 months ago, Telefonica purchased VoIP service provider Jajah for $207m. Today, it was announced that Telefonica is rolling out a new service called 'O2 Gloabl Friends' based on the Jajah technology.
Certainly we're glad to see mobile operators taking the VoIP threat seriously. Telefonica, with large operations in Europe and South America, may have been feeling the heat of Skype, now the largest service provider of international voice traffic.
For other service providers, there is an easier way than buying a VoIP provider. Based on the 3GPP GAN specification, it's possible to turn existing voice services into VoIP services.
No new VoIP gear, no new VoIP systems, it's all based on the existing voice network already installed. GAN turns the internet into a generic access network for all your mobile services, including voice. Products exist today!

Jeff talks about the changing role of Wi-Fi to mobile operators, evidenced by this and last week's announcement that AT&T is launching a free public Wi-Fi trial in Times Square, New York.
He touches on how Smart Wi-Fi could be the next step for operators to maximize the use of Wi-Fi for network offload.
Jeff says he thinks we'll see more and more operators moving to Wi-Fi to give users a really good experience, whether they're on the 3G network or the Wi-Fi network, which should be transparent to the user.

Smarter Wi-Fi for Smart Phones
I just concluded a whirlwind tour down-under. It was my first time visiting Australia and New Zealand, and both countries certainly were beautiful. And, mobile services and smartphones are exploding in popularity there, just like in the US, Europe and Asia.
It turns out there is quite a bit of overlap in the work day between Kineto's home office in California and Sydney, so much so that I found myself making and receiving numerous calls throughout the day. Like many international travelers, I rely on email from my smartphone. However, history has taught me that roaming, particularly for data, can be very costly.
I found myself relying heavily on Wi-Fi to stay connected. Fortunately, office buildings, hotels and airports and even ferry terminals all had Wi-Fi coverage.
Yet the best tool I had was Kineto's own Smart Wi-Fi application for Android devices. The application, that I'm testing, works on my Android smartphone in conjunction with my mobile operator's services in the US to provide me a virtual connection over Wi-Fi anywhere in the world.
When my phone was on Wi-Fi and the Smart Wi-Fi application was attached, I had a virtual local connection in the US. No international roaming bills; I paid standard rates for all the calls I made to the US. That saved me a bundle.
For international traveling, I found the benefits really add up quickly.
Now that I'm back in the US, as always I'm still using Wi-Fi for better indoor coverage, faster data access and more reliable 3G services.
T-Mobile offers this as a service -- Wi-Fi Calling. It's based on UMA/GAN technology and is available on a range of BlackBerries today. There's no additional cost for Wi-Fi Calling, and many corporate customers have used it to significantly reduce their phone bills.
The service is also available from other operators in other countries, like Rogers in Canada, as well as Orange in the UK and France, to name a few.
I strongly recommend T-Mobile's Wi-Fi Calling service, especially for anyone traveling internationally. We use it extensively and it has saved us huge amounts on roaming costs for both data and voice.

UMA @ MWC
At MWC, UMA was certainly not as hot a topic as femtocells, but it continues to be a successful service offer for the providers offering it. There are so many companies with UMA products that the community's become a 'who's who' of the mobile industry.
- Unik generates higher household ARPUs
- Unik subscribers churn less than average
But he also took the time to talk about why UMA is key for the company's mobile TV service. The service was launched with two new 3G UMA phones, the Sony Ericsson G705u and LG Secret KF-757.
- UMA provides a seamless experience, switching the streaming TV signal from 3G to Wi-Fi.
- UMA and Wi-Fi complement the 3G macro network with high bandwidth and a strong signal indoors.
- UMA, with it’s SIM-based authentication, satisfies DRM requirements for delivery over Wi-Fi.
- There are an increasing number of high-end multimedia phones with UMA.

One announcement the UMA community was hoping for was an unveiling of the HTC Jade, a phone rumored to have UMA support. Unfortunately, no such announcement was forthcoming. But CTIA is just around the corner…
Of course the Kineto stand had its regular display of all UMA-enabled products. With 24 handsets, three terminal adaptors and five handset platforms on display, it’s clear UMA devices are abundant.

NEC Turns Up Femtocells

Two announcements today from NEC in the femto market.
First, the company announced it received an order from Softbank in Japan for it’s IMS-based femtocell system. The system does require an IMS infrastructure, which can be troublesome for many existing mobile operators. Softbank’s goal is to be commercial in January 2009.
I believe this is the first commercial announcement/award for 3G femtocells.
Second, NEC made a strategic investment in Kineto Wireless, it’s supplier for RAN gateway-based femtocell solutions. The undisclosed investment was NEC’s first in the femtocell market.
With a win in the IMS approach and an investment in the RAN gateway approach, it appears that NEC is well positioned in the femtocell market moving forward.

Four visionary leaders in UMA technology sat down with Ed Sperling, editor in chief of Electronic News, for a round table discussion about convergence, mobile/Wi-Fi services and UMA technology. In attendance were Muzibul Khan, VP of product management and engineering at Samsung; Ton van Kampen, VP of business development at NXP; Chris Caldwell, product development manager at T-Mobile, and Mark Powell, VP and founder of Kineto Wireless.

UMA-enabled Femtocells?
A common question I get is “when femtocells arrive, won’t they displace UMA?” First off, what is generally meant by this is not ‘...displace UMA’ but more accurately ‘...displace dual-mode handset services.’ UMA, as we all know, is a generic IP access technology that can be used to implement a dual-mode handset (DMH) service with cellular/Wi-Fi phones but it’s not actually tied specifically to Wi-Fi.
However, as a generic IP access technology for mobile services, UMA actually plays a key role in a mass-market femtocell solution.
As the operators begin to plan for a robust deployment with hundreds of thousands of femtocell access points into the network, some stringent requirements have emerged:
- An industry recognized, well defined standard such than any femto AP can be interoperable with any core network controller
- “Internet grade” security to run over the public broadband network
- A high-capacity, scalable controller to support thousands of concurrent connections
- The ability to support “consumer” behaviors of unplugging access points, moving access points, plugging in access points where they don’t belong (different countries)
- A protocol which supports a retail femtocell distribution model such that each AP is “standard” out of the box and can self-configure/attach to the network
- And it goes without saying: cost-effective core network controller solution that will not throw the business case out of whack.
But after digging in a bit, it’s pretty well understood that Iu-b was designed to meet a different set of deployment requirements. Iu-b was architected to support a handful of extremely high capacity radio connected over private, secure, managed links.
This is nearly the exact opposite of a femtocell deployment, with many thousands of low capacity (in terms of concurrent calls) radios, all connected over un-managed and un-secured IP networks.
UMA however, was designed for just such a deployment scenario. UMA offers a well defined, robust protocol with a secure connection to the mobile core. In a DMH deployment, UMA supports hundreds of thousands of devices with relatively low concurrent capacity, quite similar to the femtocell usage model. As a well defined standard, femtocell technology suppliers such as UbiquiSys and others can develop UMA-enabled products which interoperate with UMA controllers from Motorola, Nokia, Ericsson and Alcatel.
As operators begin to leverage the public internet and broadband IP to deliver mobile services, UMA will be used for more applications beyond DHM and femtocells. UMA is truly becoming the ‘Universal’ Mobile Access protocol.
